It is a Dog not a person

I have to vent a bit about this thinking that dogs are human.  Some PERSON gave my mother’s husband a rough time about having his dog outside in the cold.  This is not some hairless little dog that belongs at some tropical paradise, Chara is a good sized dog with a lot of fur for the cold weather.   Good heavens what does she think huskies in Alaska do.  Many of them stay outside without a doghouse to sleep in, and shake the snow off in the morning.  Is she going to go out and find the all the coyotes and bring them inside?   Chara has a doghouse if she gets too cold and gets to sleep in the garage at night.  She does not like to stay in the dog house as she prefers to play in the snow and chase what ever squirrel might pass by, but this PERSON just had to report them for animal cruelty.   Thank goodness the officer that came out to see the dog realized how well the dog was truly taken care of.   All of my dogs have been outside dogs and have only come inside when temps dropped to single digits.   Even at that I had a dog that could not stay inside for any length of time because she got too hot and wanted back out.  My children play outside most of the day when it snows (and is very cold) – I would like to see her try to get my kids inside on a good snow day.  They think they are being abused if we try to keep them in.  Just because you don’t like being outside does not mean the rest of want to hide from the weather and it definitely does not mean that big furry dogs should be forced to stay in.  Get over yourself!!! And let dogs be dogs!!!!

Keep learning to keep growing

I was feeling a bit under the weather today so we did not make it skiing.  We slept in and we were able to watch Joel’s sermon. Joel’s message of the day is to keep growing. Learning should not be a time of our lives but part of our lives every day for ever.   In our young years it is expected.  As babies we are expected to learn to talk, walk, and hold on to things as we grow.  Then, we are in school and we are expected and increased to keep learning a number of different things. For some reason, after our school years learning frequently becomes less important and we must motivate ourselves if we want to learn anything new.  Instead of looking for problems look for solutions.   Don’t settle for ok but keep growing and improving through learning every day.  Make a plan of growth, spend one hour a day learning a specific new skill or improving on old skill.  Spend time with people that can help that plan of growth.

Side note:  Being popular means other people like me.  Happiness means I like myself.

To game or not to game?

I was a bit concerned that the kids did not have enough under the tree but Alex told us that this was his best x-mass so far. Alex got a small version of a paint gun and Melinda got some stuffed animal called a webkin (she can play games on the computer with it).    Santa gave them both a Gameboy, something that I have been putting off for as long as possible. They are both already mesmerized by these little digital games.   I plan on using this as leverage to get them to complete their homework as well as chores. Today we helped them pick out a couple of games for them and I saw a driving one that I thought might be fun for Melinda.  We got home with the new games and the kids started playing with them immediately.  All of a sudden Melinda exclaims that on her game someone shot a person dead.  What?  What did you say?  Oh, no!  It was rated T for Teen not E for Everyone.  Gotta remember to look at the rating.  Alex switched games with Melinda (‘cause Melinda said, “Alex is closer to being a teen then her.”).   At least there wasn’t any graphic bloodshed.  All in all they love the games and will see how well our plan to motivate them works.  Hmmmm.

Christmas spirit?

We needed a couple of things from the grocery story (applesauce for Melinda) – I picked the short straw, so I went.  Pulling into the parking lot was as close to participating in a demolition derby as I have ever been.  Here the spirit of giving turned into the sprit of grabbing a parking spot.  It was a bit like musical chairs as we all circled the perimeter waiting for the music to stop just find out there is not enough spaces for everyone.  After a few more trips around the lot I was able to secure a place only a few miles away.  Finally able to join the hordes of grocery shoppers I found that I needed to go against the tide to get to the items I needed.

After a few hours, and only about five feet of progress, I jumped to the side and hid behind a stack of Christmas cookies, from this vantage point I was able to study the different changing currents and was able to pick the appropriate streams that would carry me to the isles that I needed to get to.   Unfortunately, sometimes I would miss my exit and would have to look for a stream that had a back flow.  While trying to work my way around the store I heard a few people mention the Lords name while they were trying to get from one isle to another.  It was nice they remembered his name this time of year but I don’t think it was in the best of context.   I tried to keep my sprits up as I was being cut off frequently and being blocked from achieving my final goal of finding the applesauce.  I kept telling myself a line from Joel Osteen:  “you can take my spot but you can’t take my joy”.  But they kept taking my spot.  I found some poor employee that was trying to put groceries (that were abandoned by customers that could not take the heat) back into their proper places and asked for assistance in getting to the applesauce. He pointed me in the right direction and gave me a push.  As the current was carrying me away, I heard his manager ask him why he wasn’t done yet.  I felt bad because he was trying to do his job and at the same time help us poor stranded grocery shoppers get on our way, but it was to late for me to turn around to tell his boss, I had drifted too far.

Finally getting my last item, (the applesauce) I made my way to the front of the store and there it was, an empty lane waiting for just me.  Could it be true that with all these people and the long lines at all of the other cashers that this one is available?  I started for it wanting to make sure it wasn’t a mirage only to see it was an express lane (15 items or less).  I stopped, I started to count – 12, 13, 14,   ….. 15, oh yea I yelled and then realized everyone was staring at me so I decided to be a bit less boisterous about my great find.

After being checked out I notice a mom frantically looking through her purse for a penny for the horse that her little girl was sitting on.  I pulled a penny out of my pocket and put it into the machine.  The loud but joyful scream lightened my heart a bit as well as the smile of relief on her mom’s face.  This helped me to prepare for the dash and dodge in the parking lot to get back to my car. Unloading the groceries Melinda got a dish of applesauce and thanked me.  So maybe it was worth it.

Ski, Ski, Ski, Ski

Another great day of skiing.  Pattie had a long day of teaching and is very tired especially after being up there two days in a row.  Alex and Melinda had a great day.  Alex got to ski with friends yesterday and one of them (the son of one of the other ski instructors) skied with Alex again today.  It makes me a little nervous to let them ski on their own as they love to go fast and need to be reminded to stay in control.   They both lived and had a great time – you know it is already much more fun than skiing with dad or mom.  I knew that this would happen but I truly thought that he would be a teenager before he got bored with me.   Even Melinda was upset that she didn’t have a friend to ski with (instead of dad).    Having said that Melinda did ski with me today and we spent a little time working on skiing bump runs.   The snow was good on one of the intermediate runs and it had relatively small moguls so it made for a great place to practice.  Melinda did great and is ready for something more difficult next week. I hope I am ready for it.
